Actor Charlie Sheen’s crazy tabloid antics have served as ongoing cannon fodder for tabloids and Hollywood gossip blogs.
But Sheen’s complex custody battles with his ex-wives, Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller, are no laughing matter. They’re sad and disturbing. In particular, the situation regarding Sheen and Mueller’s 4-year-old twin boys, Max and Bob, seems worrisome.
Over Thanksgiving, Family Services paid Denise Richards a call, after an anonymous source claimed that someone on Richards’s staff hit the boys. If you recall from our last blog post, Richards had agreed to take care of the 4-year-old twins at her house, while their biological mother, Brook Mueller, rehabbed from drug problems. The 36-year-old Mueller was married to Sheen from 2008 to 2011. Insiders suggest that the boys may have neurological issues.
From an outsider’s perspective, the situation may seem like a mess. What lessons can this multi-layered custody fight teach us about how to handle California custody cases? Here are three:
1. Document.
Keep records of everything that happens that could potentially be relevant, including witness statements, accusations, and other evidence.
2. Behave ethically.
If an ex-spouse behaves unethically or inappropriately, that doesn’t give you the right to return the favor. Keep a strong moral compass, and have faith in the legal process.
3. Get aggressive, effective legal help, as soon as you can during the process.
Avoid trying to solve child custody disputes by yourself, particularly if you have a little to no faith in the other spouse.
